1st XI v East Bergholt (H)
It was 1st Vs 3rd at Fortress St.Peters this week with the dolphins looking to bounce back after last week's disappointment away to Felixstowe.
Chris Hinks lost the toss and was asked to bat on a day with showers and some cloud in the air.
Hinks got off to a typical beligerant start hitting 3 boundaries in the 1st over whilst Matt Renvoize got off the mark with a huge 6 into the council office carpark. The rain then started to fall and the covers were rushed on by the very efficient ground staff led by the returning Matt Childs.
After the short rain delay East Bergholt got the breakthrough when Hinks was bowled by Myles O'Grady with a superb Yorker.
Dan Chalk and Matt Renvoize had built a partnership worth 60 when Renvoize edged through to the keeper for 30 leaving the score at 91/2 off just 14 overs.
Bryn Powell played some exquisite drives and cut shots during his innings and was looking in fine form when he was unfortunately caught off the bowling of Ben McGrath.
Dan Chalk raised his bat for the 3rd time in 4 innings but departed for a well-made 55 including 3 huge sixes.
Dan Garner and Rory Ciccarelli-Ainsley both came and went with the Dolphins now in a spot of bother rather than the position of strength they had earlier been in.
161/6 in the 33rd over on a good batting surface meant there was plenty of work to be done by the remaining batters to post something competitive. Robbie Spalding and Matt Childs put on 48 for the 7th wicket with both playing an array of shots. Childs sending a glorious 6 over mid-on, followed by a huge 6 over cover from Spalding. Unfortunately, both departed off the bowling of Myles O'Grady. The Dolphins being bowled out for 214 and feeling somewhat under par.
The Dolphins got off to the perfect start when Spalding found the edge of Callum Woolston’s bat and he was superbly taken one handed by Matt Renvoize behind he stumps.
This was followed up by Josh Paget bowling George Foster for just 1 leaving East Bergholt 16/2 in the 6th over.
Bergholts James Platt was building a valuable partnership with James Baker when Baker chipped up to Dan Chalk off the bowling of Himesh Patel. Bergholt now 45/3 really having to dig in and stop any further wickets slowly chipped away at the score. However shortly after raising his bat for 50, James Platt fell into one of Chris Hinks traps and was well caught by Himesh Patel at mid-on.
At drinks Bergholt were 99/4 and the pressure was on both teams as the game was in the balance. 3 quick wickets after drinks, 2 from Grace Poole and 1 from Hinks reduced Bergholt to 121/7 with the Dolphins now firmly on top.
Ben McGrath and Myles O'Grady who both had good days with the ball continued to have a good day as they set about chasing the remaining 90 runs with O'Grady playing cautiously and McGrath hitting the ball a long way. Unfortunately, it wasn't until Bergholt were 2 runs from victory that McGrath finally departed after a match winning 67 off 59 balls which included 5 ginormous sixes.
The very next over the target was reached when the ball was hit for 4 from the bat of O'Grady which was met with jubilant celebrations.
A great game of cricket where the better team on the day won.
Massive credit to Bergholt who stayed behind and had plenty of drinks after the game.
