2nd XI v Tendring (H)
It was an Andrew Sherry inspired Braintree that enjoyed a convincing win for Braintree 2's as they entertained Tendring.
Looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season the toss was won by an undermanned and late tendering team and they surprisingly decided to bowl. On a flat but slow pitch and with clear skies overhead, Braintree set about punishing the undermanned Tendring team. The Braintree opening partnership raced to 50 inside the first eight overs before Dave Hale was the first batsman to fall, unfortunately chopping onto his own stumps for 29 as DJ Messenger got one to stay a little low. Guy Walton was next to the crease and started steadily before being cleaned bowled by Owen Jenno for 6 which brought Jeremy Hollingsworth to the crease for his first innings of the season. It took him no time to settle into his usual rhythm of glorious straight shots down the ground, capped off by a fantastic six over long off. Nick Lockhart at the other end, was building up to back to back 50's, looking effortless and classy as he punished anything slightly wide. Alas, a change of bowling brought the end to Hollingsworth’s promising innings as he chipped Starling to mid-off for 22. This brought Andrew Sherry to the crease who was looking to recapture his early season good form. He and Lockhart continued to tick along nicely until Lockhart played a tired looking drive and was caught at mid-on for 69, a second wicket for Steven Starling.
Skipper Gowers joined Sherry in the middle and the two Andrews set about building a partnership and getting Braintree up to 200. After a few overs of swinging and missing, the pair started to finally find the middle of the bat and boundaries consistently. In no time at all, Andrew Sherry reached 50 as he punished anything slightly short while Gowers continued to rotate strike to get Sherry back on strike. He bludgeoned his way up to a magnificent 100 which included 12 boundaries and 5 maximums and quickly Braintree were reaching the three hundred 300 mark. Sherry, finished unbeaten on 110 and Gowers on 46*, a very imposing total of 307 was set.
Tendring started their reply well, before Robbie Spalding removed veteran Pat Patel for 9 thanks to a sharp catch taken by Gowers at point. Having struck his first 2 balls for 4 through cover, Casey Chambers then struggled to lay a bat on Spalding as Tendring’s number 3 frustrated the Braintree opening bowler. Enter man of the match Andrew Sherry, who began to dismantle the Tendring batting line up, taking 4-13 in a devastating 7 over spell that snuffed out any hope Tendering may have had at chasing down Braintree's imposing total. Young Guns Adcock and Osborne, then entered the attack taking the remaining 4 wickets to wrap up the game for Braintree. Adcocks leg spin accounting for Owen Jenno for 10 and Oliver Wicks for 3 before Jow Osbourne removed the dogged Chambers for 36 and wrapped things up when he bowled Dass for 1
