Dev XI v Terling (H)
Braintree's Sunday XI entertained Terling in what was scheduled to be their final outing of a hugely successful season.
Having won the toss, skipper Joe Osborne elected to bat on a warm and dry day and Braintree got off to a flyer as Adam Westall and Karl Parker hit 2 boundaries apiece in the first 2 overs to get the Dolphins off and running in style. There was a blip in the matrix in the third over as Parker gave Sid Tokely a simple catch at square leg for 8 but that brought Dave Hale to the crease and he and Westall put on a quick fire stand of 110 with both looking to attack from the off. Hale reached his 50 from just 41 balls before and was eventually caught on the square leg boundary for 80. His 52 ball knock contained 13 x 4 and 3 maximums including 1 huge strike over long on.
The scoring rate dipped slightly on his departure but Callum MacLeod and Adam Westall continued to tick over until Westall was caught by Russell Thorpe off of the bowling of Greg Oldham for an excellent 38. A decent finish to what has been an excellent Sunday season for the youngster who scored 235 runs in 5 games including his maiden senior century.
Harvey Castle-Hacker joined MacLeod at the crease and found his feet with 3 excellent boundaries before being bowled by Marcus Jessiman for 13. Braintree then lost Guy Walton (1), Matt Kent (10) and Joe Osborne (8) in the pursuit of quick runs but McLeod brought up his 3rd fifty since returning to the game to finish 57* as Braintree posted 240-7 in their 40 overs.
Terling got off to a flying start in their response as Marti Cullum and Marcus Jessiman took the attack to the Braintree opening duo of Thomas Mellon and Joe Osborne being particularly harsh on anything slightly short. It was Mellon who got the breakthrough however when Jessiman (33), having had a simple chance put down a few balls earlier, offered Osborne a chance to redeem himself which he did as he took a fine catch at cover.
Karl Parker came into the attack to replace Osborne and had an immediate impact as he had Cullum caught sharply at Mid Wicket by Guy Walton for 31 before Mellon struck in quick succession to remove Dinesh Pitchai, caught by Joe Osborne for 6 and then Greg Oldham, caught behind by Mark Osborne for 0. From 62-0 Terling had slipped to 80-4. Sam Norman and Andy Ormerod set about repairing the damaged a put a fine partnership together as they punished anything wayward while being watchful where needed. It was Geoff Eveling who would break the 71 run stand though as he had Norman casually snapped up at slip by Dave Hale for 32. Ormerod would go on to make a well deserved 51 before Matt Kent breached his defences but not before Guy Walton had blown away the middle order with 3 wickets all caught by an Osborne! Joe taking the catches to remove both Joshua and David Franklin for 4 and 0 respectively and Mark stumping Scott Vine for 14. Matt Kent wrapped things up as he had Tokley caught in the gully by Eveling for 2, Terling were all out for 203.
Thomas Mellon (3-53) and Guy Walton (3-28) the pick of the Braintree bowlers
